Can an EU visitor drive in Britain?

Short answerCurrent GOV.UK guidance says visitors with a non-UK driving licence can drive in the UK, and EU, EEA and Swiss visitors do not need an International Driving Permit. You still need valid motor insurance.

What you need to know

If you are borrowing a UK-registered car, the insurance must cover you on that vehicle.

If you bring your own foreign-registered vehicle, different proof-of-insurance rules apply.

Important for this situation

The licence rule does not mean you are insured on someone else’s car.

Need short-term car insurance?

If you are eligible and need temporary cover, you can compare available short-term insurance quotes and check the territorial limits of the policy offered before you buy.
